When people think of Hawaii, they often think of sunshine, white sand beaches, and relaxation. This image is spot-on for an Oahu vacation. One of the top things to do on the island is visit any of the best beaches in Oahu Hawaii for snorkeling, swimming, or relaxing with a Mai Tai in hand.

I’ve traveled to Hawaii dozens of times and recently returned from a week long vacation to Oahu. This trip was full of adventure activities, food tastings, and exploration. But, it was also balanced with plenty of beach time.

I visited the North Shore, Waikiki, Honolulu, and the west coast of the island. I also chatted with a ton of my travel blogging friends to put together a list of the best beaches on Oahu Hawaii.

The below list of the best beaches in Oahu includes the top beaches on all parts of the island, and the best beaches for activities such as snorkeling, swimming, and surfing.

Best Beaches on North Shore of Oahu

1. Sunset Beach

One of the best Oahu beaches has to be Sunset Beach in the North Shore. In fact, I loved this beach so much, I visited twice on my recent week long trip to Oahu!

This is hands down the best beach in Oahu for catching the sunset. The angle of the beach perfectly faces the sun as it sets over the horizon.

Sunset beach is also great for swimming. The waves are gentle and the sand is super soft on your feet.

There is a parking lot directly across the street from this North Shore beach, so it’s easy to visit.

2. Laniakea Beach “Turtle Beach”

The Hawaiian green sea turtle is Hawaii’s most iconic animal, and Laniakea Beach (“Turtle Beach”) on Oahu’s north shore is one of the very best places to spot them.

If you’re visiting Oahu with young kids, Laniakea Beach is a must-visit, since this beach presents a rare opportunity to see turtles resting on the sand without having to snorkel.

Though it’s generally recommended to go early and beat the crowds to Hawaiian beaches, if you’re in search of turtles on the sand you’re more likely to have success in the mid-late afternoon when they come ashore to bask in the warm Hawaiian sun.

Volunteers known as “honu guardians” (after the Hawaiian word for the turtles) maintain a regular presence at Laniakea Beach to educate the public about the turtles and help ensure visitors maintain a respectful distance from turtles.

Laniakea Beach is located on the north shore of Oahu between Haleiwa and Pupukea. There’s a small parking lot on the other side of the highway that is usually quite full but turns over quickly, since visitors don’t tend to spend all day at this beach.

3. Kawela Bay

Kawela Bay is a beautiful, secluded beach located on the northerneatern shore of Oahu. It is known for its pristine white sand, turquoise waters, and lush tropical surroundings.

It is close to the town of Kahuku and is part of the larger North Shore region, which is renowned for its stunning beaches and world-class surfing spots. It’s also close to the private turtle conservation center.

Kawela Bay is surrounded by lush greenery, including ironwood trees and coconut palms, which creates a picturesque and serene atmosphere. The bay is sheltered by rocky areas, making the water relatively calm and ideal for swimming and snorkeling.

Kawela bay is relatively shallow, and the clear waters provide excellent visibility for observing marine life and coral formations.

It’s a popular destination for visitors seeking a more peaceful retreat away from the crowds of the south shore beaches. You’ll often see couples or small families enjoying a picnic together.

4. Waimea Bay Beach

Waimea Bay Beach is located near the surfer town of Haleiwa, along Oahu’s famous North Shore. 

This crescent-shaped beach has soft sand and stunning views of the turquoise water of the Pacific on one side and volcanic cliffs on the other side.

The crystal clear waters and colorful coral—especially on the beach’s right side—offers some of the best snorkeling in Oahu during the summer months, where you can see colorful tropical fish and, if you’re lucky, even a monk seal who lives in the bay! 

During the winter months, the beach is known for something else entirely—big wave surfing! In fact, pro surfers come from all over the world to surf on the beach’s waves, which can reach up to 50 feet high. 

The beach offers several convenient amenities, including picnic tables, showers and restrooms, and proximity to some of the North Shore’s best food trucks.

While it offers a parking lot, it’s quite small and fills up early in the morning—so be sure to show up early to snag a spot!

5. Ehukai Beach Park

The ʻEhukai Beach Park or Banzai Beach located on the north shore of Oahu is one of the best beaches to visit on the island for surfers or fans of surfing. 

The break at this beach, known as the Pipeline, is one of the most famous breaks in the surfing world particularly during the winter months. Even if you’re not a surfer, this beach is still definitely worth visiting to watch the skilled surfers. 

Outside of winter, the beach is pretty calm but during the winter season the beach will be pretty packed with people, especially during surfing competitions. 

There are public restrooms, grass areas, picnic tables, and lifeguards at this beach, and even a short little hike nearby where you can see old WWII bunkers. 

Since this beach is located on the more rural end of Oahu, the easiest way to get there is driving yourself. Although Oahu does have ride-share services like Uber, it can be more difficult to find a ride from the north shore back into the city.

6. Hanauma Bay

Hanauma Bay is the best beach in Oahu for snorkeling. It’s located within a nature preserve, with a large coral reef and a ton of wildlife.

This beach requires a reservation for entry, that you need to get first thing in the morning two days before your visit. You will reserve entry at a given time, but can stay at the park until closing time.

At Hanauma Bay, there is snorkeling, swimming, and plenty of amenities. There are lifeguards on duty, a snack shack, a gift shop, and an educational facility.

If you are looking for the best Oahu beach for snorkeling, look no further than Hanauma Bay located on the south east coast of Oahu Hawaii.

7. Waikiki Beach

Waikiki beach is the most busy and popular beach in Honolulu. The Waikiki area is known for having many resorts, restaurants, and shopping.

This part of the island has the highest concentration of tourists. Although this may sound like a downside, there are also some perks.

Waikiki beach as a ton of great amenities such as beach chairs and umbrellas for rent, plenty of food vendors, and activities you can book directly off the beach.

Waikiki beach is also great for swimming because the water is very shallow and the surf crashes far from shore. The waves are gentle, the water is warm, and the sand is perfectly soft.

8. Ala Moana Beach Park

Ala Moana Beach Park in Waikiki, Hawaii is a paradise for beach lovers. It’s a little north of Waikiki beach, but still very central to resorts and shopping.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing day by the sea or an exciting adventure with friends, there are plenty of activities to keep you entertained. From swimming and surfing to snorkeling and kayaking, Ala Moana Beach Park has everything you could ever want in a beach day.

With beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean and Diamond Head as your backdrop, it’s easy to see why this park is one of the most popular destinations in Hawaii!

9. Hilton Hawaiian Village Lagoon

The Hilton Hawaiian Village Lagoon is one of the most unique and best beaches in Oahu. Nestled within the expansive Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort, this lagoon is like a private oasis within the heart of Waikiki’s vibrant atmosphere.

And no, you do not have to be a guest at the Hilton to visit the lagoon.  This lagoon is open to the public for all to enjoy.

What sets the Hilton Hawaiian Village Lagoon apart from other beaches in Oahu is its versatility. Its calm, clear waters are perfect for families with young children, allowing them to swim and play in a safe and enjoyable environment. 

It’s also a great spot for water sports such as snorkeling, paddleboarding, kayaking, and aqua bikes.  You can rent all of this equipment right there along with umbrellas and lounge chairs.

Surrounded by lush greenery and swaying palm trees, the lagoon offers a picture-perfect tropical setting.  There are plenty of dining options surrounding the lagoon making it easy to enjoy a quick snack or meal. 

Also, if you happen to be there on a Friday evening, enjoy the sunset and the fireworks show right from the lagoon.

10. Lanikai Beach

Lanikai Beach in Kailua, Hawaii is nothing short of paradise for any island traveler. With its award-winning views of the Mokulua Islands, this is a must-visit beach in Oahu during your trip. 

Visitors and locals alike come here to kayak and paddle board to the Mokuluas. The waters in the summertime are perfect for swimming and snorkeling –  you may even catch some sea turtles if you’re lucky. And of course, the famous Lanikai Pillbox Hike with supreme views of the beach and the island beyond. 

Lanikai can be a little more challenging in the winter when the currents get stronger and rougher. Because of the trade winds on the “windy side of the island”, be prepared for the sand to go wild. 

There are no amenities at this beach, including a lack of parking in a residential neighborhood. Be sure to get here early in the day if you want one of the few coveted spots along the street. However, the town of Kailua is nearby and offers some great shopping and restaurant options.

Aside from the challenges, Lanikai is regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches in Hawaii – you don’t want to miss out on experiencing its beauty in person!  

11. Kailua Beach

Kailua Beach, nestled on the windward coast of Oahu, is the epitome of a Hawaiian paradise. Located about a 30-minute drive from Honolulu, this beach is a popular spot for tourists and locals alike.

Kailua Beach is also a 7-minute drive from the famous Lanikai Pillbox Hike, so you can easily make a day out of visiting multiple bucket list locations.

With its perfect blue waters, soft white sand, and breathtaking views of the Mokulua Islands, it’s no wonder why Kailua Beach has been voted one of Hawaii’s best beaches.

But what sets Kailua Beach Park apart from other Hawaiian beaches? The water at Kailua Beach is perfect for swimming and water activities. The calm waters also make it an ideal spot for families with young children.

Another reason why Kailua Beach stands out is its watersports offerings, attracting adventurers and thrill-seekers alike. The consistent trade winds provide an excellent opportunity for kite surfers to enjoy the sport.

Aside from its watersports, Kailua Beach offers a range of other activities for visitors. The beach has picnic tables and pavilions, perfect for a family barbecue or a romantic sunset picnic.

Kailua Beach is well-equipped with amenities catering to all visitors’ needs. Restrooms, showers, and ample parking spaces make it convenient for those driving down for a day trip. Additionally, the beach features lifeguard services for the safety of all beachgoers.

Lastly, various restaurants and cafes are within walking distance, which makes it perfect for grabbing a quick snack or enjoying a meal while soaking up the spectacular views.

12. Kualoa Beach

If you want to escape the crowds of Waikiki Beach, the beach at Kualoa Regional Park provides a serene alternative. Located north of Kaneohe Bay, the beach has restrooms and lots of complimentary parking. Expect the drive from Waikiki to take 35 to 45 minutes.

At the park, you can enjoy the long expanse of sandy beach and views of Mokoli’i, also known as Chinaman’s Hat. Behind you, the Koʻolau mountain range dominates the skyline.

No reefs are nearby, so this isn’t a spot for snorkeling. However, if you like to walk, this beach provides a great place to stroll. Walking south, you can round the Kualoa Point and continue west to Secret Island Beach.

Kualoa Ranch brings tour groups here, with the option to kayak and do standup paddleboarding. You’ll find their cattle ranch a little north of Kualoa Regional Park. It’s a must-visit in Oahu, as Kualoa Ranch tours are second to none. 

Since the beach at Kualoa Regional Park has no food vendors or restaurants, you can pop across the street to Kualoa Ranch. It offers a fantastic, inexpensive buffet and caters to vegan and gluten-free diets.

13. Ko Olina Lagoons

To swim in calm, pool-like waters in Oahu, head over to Ko Olina Lagoons in Kapolei, about 30-40 minutes west of Honolulu. These consist of 4 man made lagoons with luxury resorts attached to them, they are open to the public.

It is most recommended to stay in Lagoon 4 “Ulua” because unlike the other three which are attached to resorts, Ulua is attached to Ko Olina Beach Park (where kids can play!) and offer the most amount of parking spots. 

There are large rocks as breakwaters that protect these lagoons against strong waves, making it easy and safe to swim in. Don’t forget your snorkeling gear since there are sea creatures in the lagoons!

Even if you’re not staying in any of the resorts, you can still go inside any of them to eat at the restaurants. In fact, the Disney Aulani Resort, located on Lagoon 1 “Kohola”, has plenty of restaurants, cafes, bars, and snack kiosks that are open to the public!

Beach Day Packing List

The below list includes the beach day essentials to be sure to bring for your Oahu vacation. These items will help protect you from the sun and stay comfortable for a full day in the Hawaii sun.

Swimsuit – Of course, you will need a swimsuit for a beach trip. I recommend one with good coverage so you are comfortable while swimming.

Rash guard – Protect your back from the sun with a long sleeve rash guard while swimming.

Sandals – Water sandals are a great things to pack in case there is a rocky entrance to the water.

Reef safe sunscreen – Regular chemical sunscreens contain active ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate which can harm coral reefs when washed off of your skin. Reef safe sunscreen is a type of sunscreen that is designed to protect you from the sun’s UV rays without putting coral and other marine life in danger. Be sure to use reef safe sunscreen on all Oahu beaches.

Towel – I recommend packing two towels – one to lay on when you’re on the beach and a second in the car to help wipe off the sand at the end of the day.

Snorkel gear – If you plan to snorkel at the beach, either pack your own or rent snorkel gear for the day. Be sure to have a mask, snorkel, and fins.

Waterproof camera – This is definitely not an essential item on your beach packing list, but it can be a fun addition to capture underwater photos of the sea life.

Beach Bag – A good bag is a must for the pool or beach. Unfortunately beach bags can be super bulky. This one is compact to fit into your luggage, but still holds all of your beach day essentials.
