If you’re searching for the perfect European destination to visit in November, I have just the spot for you. Salzburg, Austria is a gem, surrounded by an imposing fortress with a backdrop of snow dusted mountains.

Salzburg was the home of Mozart and the birthplace of the famous Sachertorte cake. This is just an example of all the cultural and culinary highlights of this town.

The classic film, the Sound of Music, was filmed here and you’ll be able to spot many of the movie locations as you wander around the compact Old Town. You can also take a Sound of Music tour to find all the sights while learning about the history of the city.

Some other fun tings to do are exploring the gardens and charming buildings of Mirabell Palace or climbing up to Festung Hohensalzburg. Here you will find stunning views out over the city and not so distant mountain peaks.

Visiting in November will bring cooler temperatures, but far fewer crowds compared to the summer peak season. Don’t forget to pack a warm coat and comfortable walking shoes.

By the last week of November, you can enjoy the merry festivities of the charming Christmas markets set up in the Domplatz and Residenzplatz.

There’s nothing quite like strolling around admiring handcrafted decorations with a steaming mug of mulled wine in hand. Don’t forget to pick up some souvenirs to remind you of your wonderful trip to Salzburg!

Vienna is a great European destination to visit in November. While the city is pretty awesome year-round, there is something special about visiting Vienna in winter.

Another great thing about visiting Vienna in November is that the ball season is starting. From the super famous Vienna Opera Ball to lots of smaller, glamorous events, there is always something going on in Vienna’s nightlife in November.

When in Vienna, make sure to visit Schönbrunn Palace as well as the gardens behind it. It is my favorite place in all of Vienna. You can also eat some delicious local food at the premises.

If you have some more time, you should take a day trip from Vienna to Hallstatt, one of the most beautiful places in Austria.

The weather is pretty good too, sometimes you’ll see some snow falling, but mostly it stays dry. It can be a bit colder, so make sure to pack some warm clothes.

Lyon is one of the best cities to visit in Europe.  It’s known as the capital of French gastronomy, so you know the food will be amazing, whether you choose to dine at a Michelin-starred restaurant or enjoy a hearty meal at a bouchon.

❄️Average Weather (°F) 46/37

If you’re searching for one of the best places to visit in Europe in November, head to Berlin! Known for its history, architecture, techno, and nightlife scene, this is a must-see destination in November.

As November is during the fall season, temperatures gradually drop throughout the month in preparation for winter. Average temperatures during this time are high at 46°F (8 °C) and low at 37°F (3°C). While this is indeed cold, enjoying the city’s various attractions is still possible.

One of the highlights of visiting Germany at the end of the year is the Christmas markets! These charming, festive events are the perfect way to ring in the holiday season. Berlin Christmas markets typically open within the last few days of November, including the popular one at the Rotes Rathaus.

An additional cultural event in Berlin that falls within November is the Jazzfest. Occurring during the beginning of the month, this event draws jazz artists and enthusiasts worldwide. It is one of Europe’s most famed jazz festivals and ensures you’ll have a great time!

The Parthenon, the iconic ancient temple on the Acropolis of Athens, Greece, stands against a backdrop of mountains, its Doric columns and partially restored facade bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun.

☀️Average Weather (°F) 65/53

Athens is a fantastic city to visit at any time of the year, with amazing food, fascinating history and interesting culture. But all that comes with tourists, lots and lots of tourists.

Athens in November is the perfect time to visit and an added bonus is you escape the madness of the crowds! From November 1st the price for the Acropolis and other historical sites are massively reduced, as much as half price.

With it being shoulder season, you can get great deals on hotels and even airfare. The weather can be a little mixed but if you get lucky, like we did, you can still head to the beach for a sun bathe and swim (if you are brave enough).

12. Santorini

Cliffside view of Oia, Santorini, with its distinctive white-washed buildings and blue domes, nestled on rugged volcanic cliffs above the Aegean Sea, with a clear blue sky above and traditional windmills accentuating the horizon

☀️Average Weather (°F) 65/56

While our family vacations are usually spent in national parks, when we have the chance to escape without the kids, nowhere beats Santorini for a romantic getaway.

Striking with its steep cliffs, colorful dwellings, and rugged beauty, the ancient Greek island of Santorini (known historically as “Thira”) is impressive any time of year, but November is one of the best times to visit if you don’t love crowds.

The weather on the Aegean Sea at this time of year is Goldilocks-perfection – not too hot (high in the mid-60s) not too cold (low in the mid 50s).

There is a lot of ground to cover in Santorini, which is roughly the size of the island of Manhattan. The island is horseshoe-shaped, encircling an active volcanic caldera.

Hire a driver and hit the highlights…in Oia snap a selfie overlooking Santorini’s famous blue-domed churches and stroll the ancient, narrow, cobblestone streets.

For incredible views, take the 4-minute cable car which ascends from the port to the capital town of Fira, over 700’ above the Aegean Sea.

On the southeast side of the island, don’t miss the opportunity to stick your toes in the famous black sand beaches (Perissa and Perivolos), on the Mediterranean Sea.

Head to one of Santorini’s many local vineyards. I recommend the Koutsogiannopoulos Wine Museum, where you can learn about Santorini wine making through interactive exhibits, followed by tasting wines from vineyards across the island.

Buy a bottle, and finish your day watching one of the most memorable sunsets of your life at the Oia Castle, or book a sunset cruise and enjoy your wine from the deck of a catamaran while cruising the Aegean.

13. Eger

❄️Average Weather (°F) 48/36

Eger is one of the most gorgeous places that I have visited in Hungary. The scenic town is a perfect place to visit in November. The crowds haven’t quite set in, it is not super cold and the town itself is quiet and laid back.

One of the most popular things to do in Eger is to head up to the Castle of Eger. From here you have some spectacular views of the surroundings because the castle is located on a hill.

You can spend a lot of time wandering around here but I would advise wearing warm clothes because the winds can get quite chilly.

The city itself offers a lot to explore. The main square is a popular place to stop at and admire the architecture of the buildings around.

The minaret offers a different perspective of the city if you are brave enough to climb to the top. You can even taste some of Hungary’s best wines here because Eger is one of the wine regions of the country!

The best part is that the city is just a short drive away from Budapest so it’s an easy day trip from the city!

❄️Average Weather (°F) 39/31

Iceland is undoubtedly a great destination for the winter month of November.  Many people would skip over Iceland on their list of location choices, thinking it would be far too cold but if you wrap yourself up warm and get a good pair of snow boots you’re guaranteed an amazing time on your visit!

Most travelers will touch down in Reykjavik – an epic city with lots of things to see and do such as take a walk down Rainbow Street, take in a panoramic city view from the top of Hallgrímskirkja’s tower and try some of Iceland’s best foods including some rather ‘out-there’ dishes like fermented shark.

But the main attractions of Iceland, particularly in November are its wonderful natural landforms such as its waterfalls, volcanoes and beaches.

Visiting in November gives you a higher chance of snow (but still a lower possibility of road closures) which enhances the island’s natural beauty.

Travelling to Iceland in November is great in terms of skipping out on crowds. Many attractions are quieter as the weather gets colder and the days are shorter, but the island comes to life in the snow and it looks like a winter wonderland!

A few of the island’s most visited attractions by tourists include the Blue Lagoon (a geothermally heated, vitamin-rich pool), the Golden Circle stopping at the grand Gullfoss and the Geyser Park, and the island’s south shore which is full of active volcanoes, magnificent waterfalls and immense glaciers.

25. Barcelona

☀️ Average Weather (°F) 65/54

Barcelona is a very popular place to visit in Europe – so much so, it has been a case study in over-tourism. But one of the ways you can experience this stunning city without overwhelming crowds is by visiting in the off season.

In November, the temperatures in Barcelona are cool, making it more comfortable to explore on foot than in the baking heat of summer. However, its still much milder than November in more central and northern European locations.

Other than sunbathing on the beach, which it will be too chilly for, all the great things to do in Barcelona apply in November. You can visit the striking Gaudí-designed architectural landmarks, including La Sagrada Família, Casa Batlló and Casa Mila (La Pedrera). It’s definitely worth wandering the atmospheric alleys of the Old City.

And in the handsome grid streets of Eixample, you’ll find great shopping, restaurants and cocktail bars. In fact, some of the best cocktail bars in Barcelona are considered the best cocktail bars in the world!

And towards the end of November, the Christmas market open. But be warned: these are centered around selling Christmas decorations, and don’t have the same focus on food & drink that Christmas markets elsewhere in Europe do.

Top Winter Activities:

  • See Gaudi architecture
  • Try great restaurants and cocktail bars

Why Visit Europe in November

1. Smaller Crowds: Europe in November is a perfect for those who prefer to dodge the bustling tourist crowds. Imagine strolling through the charming streets of Paris or Rome without the usual hustle and bustle.

The off-season period means more authentic interactions with locals, shorter lines at major attractions, and a calmer atmosphere.

2. Fall Leaves and Festivals: Depending on what region you visit, there are great autumn colors in Europe. The fall foliage creates a stunning backdrop for your travel photos.

Plus, this month is ripe with unique cultural festivals and events. From the Beaujolais Nouveau wine release in France to Germany’s cozy Christmas markets starting late November, these events offer a taste of Europe’s rich traditions.

I’ll never forget the warm glühwein and twinkling lights at Prague’s Christmas market – a magical experience that can’t be replicated anywhere else (and is much less crowded in November compared to December).

3. Lower Costs: November is the perfect time for luxury travelers to get more bang for their buck. Many high-end hotels and resorts in Europe offer significant off-season discounts, allowing you to indulge in luxury accommodations without the steep price tag.

This is also a great time to take advantage of shorter lines for premium experiences, whether it’s a private gondola ride in Venice or a Michelin-starred restaurant in Barcelona.

What to Wear in Europe in the Winter

The above collages show some outfit ideas for Europe in the Winter, for warm and cold-weather destinations.

When packing for Europe in November, it’s essential to consider the diverse climates across the continent. For cold destinations like Scandinavia or the Alpine regions, prioritize layers.

Start with thermal base layers, followed by a fleece or wool sweater, and top it off with a waterproof, windproof jacket. This combination will keep you warm and dry in frosty conditions.

Don’t forget cold-weather essentials like a warm hat, gloves, and a scarf. Also wear or pack waterproof boots for snowy or wet terrain.

For warmer areas like the Mediterranean coast, opt for light, adaptable layers.

A long-sleeve tee or light sweater with comfortable trousers is ideal for daytime, while a jacket or pashmina is perfect for cooler evenings.

For footwear, I recommend nicer sneakers, lightweight boots, or comfortable flats. Weather can be unpredictable so bring a lightweight rain jacket or umbrella for unexpected showers. Packing smartly for Europe in November means you’re prepared for any weather, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable travel experience.
