The 18 Best Holiday Destinations for August Around the Globe

This list of the best holiday destinations for August will make booking your summer vacation super easy. Whether you want to escape the heat to New Zealand or soak in the sun in Greece, there are vacation ideas for all travel styles.

I take a trip nearly every August for my fiancé’s birthday but sometimes struggle deciding where to go. I want to travel somewhere with good weather, but am not a huge fan of summer travel crowds.

To solve this problem, I reached out to a handful of trusted travel blogger friends for their recommendations for the best places to travel in August. Keep reading to learn where they suggested for the best end of summer trip ideas.

Europe

1. Portugal

Portugal is a wonderful destination for travelers looking for sun-drenched beaches, history, culture, and festivals in August. The weather is hot and dry, attracting many to the beaches and crystal-clear waters in the Algarve.

Explore the historical architecture, bustling markets, and cultural events in cities such as Lisbon, Porto, and Braga. Portugal is known for its gastronomy, including fresh seafood and pastéis de nata (custard pastries). 

Don’t miss the chance to enjoy a cold Vinho Verde (green wine) on a hot summer day by the seaside. Visit one of the many festivals, including the Sudoeste Festival in Zambujeira do Mar and the Coca Festival in Monção.  

While Portugal can be crowded in August, there are plenty of off the beaten path activities in Lisbon and beyond.

Stay in a 15th century palace overlooking the Tagus River, where King Manuel I used to watch the departing caravels. Hotel Palácio dos Arcos sits in the quiet seaside town of Paço dos Arcos, yet it is just a 20-minute train ride away from Lisbon’s top sites.

2. Ireland

Ireland is definitely one of the best countries to visit in August.  The weather is warm (but not too hot) and the days are very long, so you can fit in plenty of sightseeing.  Plus, there are plenty of events to enjoy from food festivals to horse races.

There are so many incredible things to do in Dublin, whether you want to see the stunning St. Patrick’s Cathedral or sample a pint at the Guinness Storehouse.  Soak up the ambiance and enjoy hearty Irish dishes and toe-tapping traditional Irish music at a pub.

Dublin can be a bit crowded in August, so plan to spend some time exploring more of Ireland.  History buffs will enjoy exploring the attractions of Kilkenny, known as Ireland’s Medieval Mile.  And it’s worth the trip to visit Ireland’s west coast to marvel at the stunning Cliffs of Moher.

3. Greece

Looking for one of the top countries to travel to in August? Greece needs to be high on your list, then! With its mix of rich history and culture, notable architecture, and stunning landscapes, this country does everything but disappoint. 

August is among the most popular times to visit Greece due to the hot weather, entertainment options, and endless water activities.

Regarding things to do in Greece in August, the options are endless. Some popular activities include catamaran cruises and ATV tours around the islands, archaeological sites like the Acropolis, and exploring charming villages. If you go somewhere like Mykonos, expect some of the best DJs and artists to perform at the top venues. 

August is also a holiday month, Saint’s Day of the Virgin Mary. On this day, Greeks celebrate the death and resurrection of the Virgin Mary with feasts, traditional dances, and other festivities.

One downside to visiting in August is that it falls during peak season. This means you’ll see the highest rates for accommodation and transportation. The crowds can also become uncomfortable and annoying in famous places like Santorini and Athens.

4. Malta

Those looking for a perfect Mediterranean location in August, that is less populated, should consider Malta. This beautiful location offers so much to see and do.

Of course, this little island certainly has amazing beaches and the famous Blue Lagoon for relaxing days but those looking for a little more have a wide variety of sights to visit:

·      Military forts and museums for instance St Elmo
·      Fabulous markets like Marsaxlokk
·      Elaborate churches including the St John’s Co-Cathedral

And in August there are many events including wine and international food, film and music festivals to enjoy.

Staying in the capital city of Valletta gives you a good base to travel from. Check out Palazzo Consiglia which provides a central location, relaxed rooms and a patio on the roof for relaxing after a day of exploring.

5. Norway

Norway is a top destination to visit in August due to its stunning natural landscapes and favorable weather conditions. During this month, the country is blessed with the warmth of the late summer, long daylight hours, and mild temperatures ideal for exploring its breathtaking fjords, mountains, and coastal towns. 

You can plan a Norway road trip or book a cruise tour around Norway’s famous fjords while stopping at the scenic countryside. As days are long, driving across mountainous roads across fjords becomes relatively safe, as roads are usually covered with snow in the winter. 

Events In Norway –

Oslo Jazz Festival – This festival is held in Oslo andfeatures a week of performances by international and Norwegian jazz artists. 

Øya Festival – This is also held in Tøyen Park, Oslo, and features a diverse lineup of international and local artists across various genres. 

Peer Gynt Festival is held in Gudbrandsdalen. It is inspired by Henrik Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt and features performances, concerts, and art exhibitions. The festival often includes an outdoor theater performance at Lake Gålå.

The Telemark Canal Festival takes place across various locations along the Telemark Canal. It celebrates the historic Canal with events such as boat trips, concerts, markets, and cultural activities. 

As it is peak tourist season, all hotels are booked in advance, and you find most of them at high prices. For budget-friendly people, visiting Norway in August can be challenging. 

August is a prime time to visit Norway, as it offers many outdoor activities. From hiking to biking along the coastal towns and even fishing, there’s something for every adventure enthusiast.

If you’re looking for a more laid-back and scenic destination, consider heading to the Lake District in August. This stunning national park in northwest England offers breathtaking landscapes of mountains, lakes, and forests, making it a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts.

While England is known for its unpredictable weather throughout the year, August generally brings warmer temperatures. However, it’s important to note that rain showers can still occur, so it’s advisable to pack a light raincoat or umbrella.

August in England may have a few downsides that are worth considering before planning your visit. One of the main concerns is the increased traffic on the roads. 7. France

In August, there is so much to do in France. You can visit iconic French landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Museum, the Arc de Triomphe, and more.

However, there are potential downsides to visiting France in August. As it is peak tourist season, major attractions can be crowded, and flight and accommodation prices tend to be higher. Additionally, some local businesses and restaurants in smaller towns might close for their vacations, as many French people take holidays this month.

8. Canada

Canada, with its dramatic mountains, impossibly turquoise lakes, and abundant wildlife, is one of the best countries to visit in August.  

One of the awesome things about visiting Canada in August is that its high elevation roads and trails will finally be free of ice and snow, making it the perfect time for outdoor adventures.

For example, Banff in the summer is spectacular—not only can you kayak across the national park’s famed glacial lakes but all of its most popular hiking trails, like Little Beehive or the Lake Agnes trail, should be open and readily accessible. 

August is also a fantastic time to see Canada’s fantastic wildlife. For example, you can spot whales around New Foundland or in the Bay of Fundy or you can head to Vancouver Island to see black bears.

The warmer months are when wildlife is most active in Canada, so you’ll have an excellent shot of spotting some sort of critter during your trip. 

Because of the excellent weather and endless outdoor adventure opportunities, August also happens to be one of the busiest months for tourism in Canada—so expect to share hiking trails with others and to pay a premium for hotels and airfare.

9. Brazil

Brazil is great year-round, but even better in August. Brazilians have their school holidays in July, so you’re likely to find beautiful villages and beaches less crowded in August.

Brazil offers stunning nature, rich culture, friendly people, and delicious food. Big cities boast excellent art, museums, and nightlife. In short, Brazil has it all.

For most visitors, Rio de Janeiro, its beaches, and Iguazu Falls are unmissable. My favorite beach villages include Paraty (near Rio), Morro de São Paulo and Pipa (both on the northeast coast). The Amazon Rainforest is also a must-see.

In Rio, Copacabana Palace and Emiliano offer spectacular ocean views on Copacabana Beach. For the best view of Iguazu Falls, stay at Hotel Belmond inside the National Park. In the Amazon, Mirante do Gavião provides luxurious and exclusive accommodations in the heart of the rainforest.

Africa

10. Namibia

Namibia is an incredible destination. In fact, I’d be so bold as to say it’s one of the top countries to visit in Africa. 

August is the best time to visit Namibia. It’s winter in the Southern Hemisphere, so the weather is pleasant and dry. Not only does this make the days more comfortable, but it’s the best time for going on a safari at Etosha National Park. 

There are so many wonderful things to see and do in Namibia. If you like your attractions big, Sossusvlei has some of the highest sand dunes in the world, while Fish River Canyon is the second-largest canyon in the world. 

Then there’s magical Spitzkoppe, commonly referred to as the ‘Matterhorn of Africa’. This community conservation area consists of rocky outcrops set in the middle of the desert. It’s a wonderful place to camp. 

The only downside to visiting Namibia in August is that it is the peak season, so car rentals and campsites are busier.

11. Kenya

One of the top countries to travel to in August is Kenya for the Great Migration. Millions of wildebeest and zebra cross the Mara River to follow the rains during this month and it’s incredible to see!

While many people visit Kenya for the animals, don’t skip over Nairobi. Spend a few days in the capital city before heading out on a safari to Masai Mara National Park and see these incredible animals.

You can take a hot air balloon ride over the Masai Mara for a jaw-dropping view of the animals from above. Zebra, wildebeest, giraffes, elephants, lions, and more are all spotted in this park.

Staying in Mara Bush Camp provides a truly unique Kenyan experience. With hippos in the river nearby, sustainability practices in place, and luxury glamping unlike anywhere else, it’s a truly amazing place to stay.

The only downside of visiting Kenya in August is that the prices will be higher. The Great Migration is an iconic experience, so the price tag is definitely worth it.

12. Morocco

One of the best countries to visit in August is Morocco. It’s a bit too hot to visit the Sahara or explore Marrakech. However, it is a great time to relax at a riad in Marrakech and swim in a plunge pool. 

You could also visit Essaouira. Relax by the beach and try surfing or kite surfing since August is one of the windiest months of the year. It’s the perfect time to hit the waves in this charming, blue and white city. If you need a lesson, you can book one through Moga Surf. 

Alternatively, head to the beautiful blue city of Chefchaouen and hike through the Rif Mountains to Akchour Waterfall. It’s a bit hot, but there are plenty of pools and waterfalls to swim in along the way.

All in all, August is a great time to visit Morocco if you love sunshine, enjoy the beach, and want to go for a refreshing swim.

13. Tunisia

Tunisia is a great country to visit in August. If you are looking for a beach vacation, you won’t be disappointed.

The water in the Mediterranean Sea during this month is warm and perfect for swimming (you can expect 25C or more). Keep in mind that overall, weather will be quite hot. But it’s summer after all!

I recommend staying a few days in the capital Tunis which has plenty of wonderful beaches and visit some coastal towns like Hammamet or Sousse which boast a lot of great resorts.

In Tunis, there are many excellent hotels with their own beach, and you will have a wide choice. I recommend staying either at Residence Tunis or Four Seasons Tunis, which are both perfect for vacation.

While in Tunis, make sure to visit the National Bardo Museum and the Medina of Tunis. In Hammamet, you could stay at one of the Azur resorts (Royal Azur, Sol Azur) which offer a great experience.

14. Malaysia

You can’t go wrong when you visit Malaysia in August. The country offers a unique blend of destinations, from the historical town of Malacca to its capital Kuala Lumpur and the rainforests of Borneo. 

In August, the weather varies significantly. The east coast, including the Perhentian Islands and Redang, enjoys perfect beach weather with clear skies and calm seas. 

However, peninsular Malaysia, including Kuala Lumpur, experiences the rainy season with frequent afternoon showers. While it might sound unattractive, these showers are predictable and provide a refreshing break from the heat. 

Top things to do in Kuala Lumpur include visiting the Petronas Twin Towers, admiring the Batu Caves, and exploring historical sites around Dataran Merdeka. 

For a luxurious stay, consider the Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur, located in KLCC with views of the Petronas Twin Towers. 

August is also a good time to visit as Malaysians celebrate Hari Merdeka (Independence Day) on the 31st, with plenty of celebrations around the country. 

Combining a visit to Kuala Lumpur with a trip to the east coast offers a perfect August getaway.

15. India

My hometown, “Chikmagalur,” nestled in the heart of the Western Ghats of India, is truly a destination worth exploring in August.

Having called this place home for 15 years, I’ve experienced all the nuances of Chikmagalur, but August stands out as particularly green and refreshing.

There is constant downpour and fog on the mountain peaks – Ballarayana Durga (4950 ft) and Mullayana Giri (6360 ft). When the sunshine peaks through, it feels like heaven opening.

There are at least 15 other peaks in and around Chikmagalur where you can hike. After a day of adventure, nothing beats cozying up by a wood fire at a heritage homestay or a luxury hotel, indulging in freshly brewed coffee and crispy, hot jackfruit chips.

The best places to stay are the Java Rain Resort or The Serai.

16. New Zealand

New Zealand might not be your first choice for an August holiday, but it’s an excellent option if you want to escape the crowds and have a unique experience. 

In New Zealand, August is the winter season, meaning stunning snow-covered mountains can be seen in many parts of the South Island. It’s an ideal time for skiing, and there are fewer tourists in places that are very busy during summer.

While Europe and the USA are crowded in August, New Zealand offers the chance to travel without the crowds. This allows for more authentic experiences with locals and better deals on accommodation and activities.

In August, the off-season for travel in popular North Island destinations such as Rotorua, Coromandel, and the Bay of Islands, you can enjoy a more exclusive experience with fewer queues. It’s an especially excellent time to immerse yourself in the hot thermal waters of Rotorua.

However, one of the top things to do in New Zealand’s South Island is to visit the snow fields. The South Island offers a variety of ski fields, each offering unique experiences, from beginner skiing to family adventures and backcountry journeys for more experienced skiers.

Queenstown comes alive in August with snow enthusiasts from all over the country descending for a week of skiing fun. The town is a hub of activity, with restaurants and bars in party mode.

Nevertheless, one of our favourite winter adventures is a road trip through New Zealand’s snow-covered South Island to enjoy stunning views of the Southern Alps and take hikes with views of lakes, glaciers and Mt. Cook, the highest mountain in the country.

We love our stays at the iconic Hermitage Hotel, where the rooms and fine dining offer breathtaking mountain views.

17. Australia

While the middle of winter might seem like a strange time to visit Australia, some parts of the huge country are best in August.

Forget the south and look north to Queensland, the state famous for its tropical weather and the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef.

In winter the average water temperature of the reef sits around 24°C (75°F), plus it’s outside stinger season – so you can snorkel in a bikini without needing to wear a full-length stinger suit.

For a luxe reef adventure, stay in Port Douglas where you’ll have a choice of high-end resorts, such as Niramaya Villas & Spa.

Further south the state capital, Brisbane, comes alive with its winter event calendar. While summer brings unpredictable summer storms, August welcomes sunny 22°C (72°F) days with bright blue skies. The biggest Brisbane event is the annual Ekka, an agricultural show that brings the country to the city. 

August is also the middle of whale watching season, when more than 30,000 humpback whales cruise to and from the icy Antarctic waters to Queensland’s tropics to mate, feed and play. Hervey Bay, the whale watching capital of Australia, host an annual whale festival each August.

18. Fiji

With a group of more than 300 islands, Fiji is one of the most beautiful locations in the South Pacific. Popular for its stunning and pristine beaches, rich and vibrant culture, spectacular landscapes, and beautiful places and resorts to stay, Fiji has a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation.

From exploring the cultural side by visiting the local villages and tasting the kava to diving into the crystal-clear waters at Beqa Lagoon, there are many things to do in Fiji.

One of the fascinating things to see is the fire walking ceremony where the locals walk on fire. You can see this at any of the local festivals or at the resorts that organize the cultural shows.

The best time to visit Fiji is between May and October, and August falls within the dry season, making it ideal to venture outdoors and explore the underwater Fijian waters. With an average temperature ranging between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius, August is the peak touristy season.

As there is a huge demand in August, the prices for flights, hotels and excursions are higher than usual. And be prepared for a massive crowd.
