Joshua Tree National Park in the Summer
Joshua Tree is a unique national park in eastern California, near Palm Springs. Joshua Tree National Park is a desert landscape with iconic rock formations and Joshua trees.
While many choose to visit in the winter due to weather, Joshua Tree in the summer can be equally fun.
The only time I have visited Joshua Tree National Park is in the summer, and I enjoyed it! The park has two entrances, making it the perfect, drivable loop.
Spending time in the air conditioned car and viewing the national park safari style is the best way to see the unique landscape while staying cool.

Tips for Joshua Tree Summer Weather
If you find yourself near Joshua Tree National Park in the summer months, it will be HOT with temperatures surpassing 100 degrees Fahrenheit daily. Below are some tips for beating the heat.
- Arrive early in the morning before peak-day temperatures
- Pack cold water, a sunhat and sunscreen
- A portable fan, like this one can provide a lot of relief for when you are out of the car
- Prioritize seeing roadside sites from the car, and select a couple key sites to get out for
Joshua Tree National Park Summer Loop Drive
Joshua Tree National Park has two entrances connected by a long loop. Plan to go in one entrance and out the other, stopping for sites along the way.
Leave Palm Springs in the early morning and grab breakfast for the road. Take note of the changing scenery as you depart the resort town.
Along the way you will drive through windmill farms and small desert towns.
Once you arrive in Joshua tree, stop by the visitor center to get a map and ask any questions. This will help direct you to the most popular sites such as the cholla cactus garden, black rock, arch rock or various nature trails.
This self-drive audio tour is a great way to learn about the park from the comfort of your car. I recommend playing it over your car’s audio while you drive.
Joshua Tree National Park is famous for the unique topography with jagged rock formations, barren dessert and (obviously) the Joshua trees.
The above stops are great options and among the most popular. However, they can get overcrowded at times.
Most of the sites are clearly marked from the main road, so keep an eye out for things that sound interesting then pull off to explore.
Some of the biggest attractions are the Joshua trees and the unique rock formations. They are everywhere, so pull over where it is not busy for the best shots!
If you find yourself in Joshua Tree National Park at night, be sure to look up at the fantastic night sky. The cloudless nights and lack of light pollution make for great stargazing and if you are lucky, a great view of the milky way.
Where to Stay Near Joshua Tree National Park
The best lodging near Joshua Tree is in Palm Springs, around an hour away. The area immediately around the National Park does not have many accommodation options besides camping which I do not recommend unless you have air conditioning.
Some great campgrounds are Indian Cove Campground and Black Rock Campground, if you are willing to face the weather.
Check out Airbnb for some unique stays in the cooler months such as glamping tents and airstream trailers.
Find amazing accommodations in Palm Springs with fun pools, retro vibes and unique restuarants. Some great options are:
Mid-Range– La Quinta Resort and Club ($150 per night)
The La Quinta Resort is a large Waldorf Astoria property with comfortable casitas, 15 pools and a golf course. This property was also featured on the most recent season of the Bachelorette.
Luxury– The Ritz Carlton Rancho Mirage ($300 per night)
Living up to the Ritz Carlton reputation, this resort delivers on comfortable luxury with a spa, two restaurants and exceptional service.
Palm Springs has a variety of Airbnb’s and hotels for any price range. The surrounding areas of La Quinta and Palm Desert are also amazing options.
Visiting Palm Springs or Joshua Tree National Park in the summer will be hot, so accommodations with a pool are always a great idea (and AC is a must).
