11 Best Things to Do in San Pedro Belize on Vacation

I recently got back from a 10 day trip to Belize that was split between time on the island of Ambergris Caye (San Pedro) and in the jungles of San Ignacio. I reccomend visiting both places, but this post specifically is about the top things to do in San Pedro Belize.

From snorkeling the Belize Barrier reef to sipping a coconut mojito at Secret Beach, there are a ton of fun activities on this small tropical island.

Below, I share all of the activities I did with an honest review, a couple activities you cannot miss, and a list of things that I did not get the chance to do but wish I could have.

1. Snorkeling the Belize barrier Reef

Best for Nature lovers

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

✅ Snorkel the best reef in North America

✅ Swim with sharks

✅ Explore Belize from the water

If there’s one adventure not to miss in San Pedro, it’s snorkeling. I’ve explored underwater worlds around the globe, but snorkeling in Belize stands out—there’s nothing quite like it! For the best experience, go in the morning when the sun isn’t too harsh, and the cooler hours are perfect for spotting active marine life.

Two essential spots to visit are Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley. Hol Chan is bustling with life—expect colorful fish, turtles, nurse sharks, rays, and more. Having a guide really made a difference, too; ours pointed out hidden gems like an octopus in a tiny shell and a sea cucumber blending into the sandy seafloor.

Shark Ray Alley is the place to spot nurse and reef sharks, practically guaranteed due to boat chumming. The sight of eagle rays drifting by is unforgettable.

If time allows, Coral Gardens is an excellent third snorkeling stop where unique coral formations create a vibrant underwater backdrop.

There are plenty of snorkel tour options in San Pedro, but a private charter (below) is a great choice for larger groups looking for a bit of flexibility and personal space.

2. Private Catamaran Charter

Best for Big Groups

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

✅ All inclusive food and drinks

✅ Choose your own itinerary

✅ Privacy for your group

At the end of our Belize trip, we all shared our highlights around the dinner table, and for half of us, the private catamaran charter was the standout experience. If you’re in a group of 8-16, I can’t recommend it enough.

The all-inclusive package includes a dedicated crew, an open bar, and delicious local food, with the homemade shrimp ceviche being a perfect way to end the day. The rum punch, a staple in Belize, was a hit, but be warned—it’s strong! We couldn’t stop laughing and repeating, “beware of the rum punch!”

Our 8-hour journey was packed with snorkeling stops at Hol Chan, Shark Ray Alley, and Coral Gardens, followed by a buffet lunch on board and free time at Caye Caulker to explore highlights like tarpon feeding, shopping for souvenirs, and grabbing a drink at the vibrant “Split.” As the sun set, we cruised back to San Pedro, feeling thoroughly spoiled. This day was 10/10 in every way.

3. Secret Beach Day Trip

Three friends stand together on a sandy beach, wearing crochet cover-ups and sandals, with palm trees and lounge chairs in the background. The beach scene is lively, with colorful umbrellas and people enjoying the water under a bright sky at what appears to be Secret Beach in Belize.

Ambergris Caye’s beaches are beautiful, although sargassum can be a concern at some spots. Secret Beach is tucked away in a protected cove, making it sargassum-free and ideal for a beach day.

Though “Secret Beach” is well-known now, it’s still a fantastic stretch of beach bars on the island’s west coast. Grab a golf cart, choose a beach club, and settle in for the day. The coconut mojitos here are amazing! Fresh mint and coconut give it that perfect Belizean twist—it’s blended, refreshing, and not overly sweet.

Each beach bar is similar, offering drinks, food, and loungers. We particularly enjoyed Happy Island for its sandy beach and floating water park, as well as Blue Bayou with in-water picnic tables and a volleyball net right in the water.

4. Day Trip To Caye Caulker

A woman stands barefoot in front of the large, colorful "The Split" sign at Caye Caulker, Belize, wearing a black bikini and an orange cover-up. The beach setting features a bright blue sky, with the ocean visible to the right and a few people and huts in the background.

For a change of pace, take a quick ferry ride to Caye Caulker, a smaller island with a more laid-back vibe than Ambergris Caye. Known for its backpacker scene, Caye Caulker has great nightlife and a vibrant energy, especially around the Split—the heart of the island’s beach bar scene.

Since the island is so small, you can walk the whole thing easily. Spend time feeding tarpons, exploring local shops with better prices than San Pedro, and enjoying the local beach bars. Around the Split, you’ll find the most lively spots, perfect for a relaxed afternoon.

5. Explore Downtown San Pedro

Palm Trees near the Sea

Downtown San Pedro may be small, but it’s worth a half-day visit. The area caters to tourists, filled with restaurants, souvenir shops, and hotels, and is perfect for a relaxed stroll.

Park nearby, then wander the area to browse the shops, which offer the usual souvenirs like t-shirts, magnets, and shot glasses. If you’re looking for something unique, try these spots:

  • Belize Chocolate Factory: Build your own truffle box and taste some locally made treats.
  • San Pedro Sign: A great photo spot by the beach, though parking next to it is reserved for taxis, so plan to park a few blocks away.
  • Belikin Beer Shop: Everything here is themed around Belize’s local beer, Belikin. I picked up a t-shirt as a memento—it’s a fun, unique stop among the usual souvenir shops.

Other Top Activities in San Pedro

The above activities are all the things I did on my 10 day trip to Belize. However, with only 4 nights in San Pedro, I obviously could not do every popular excursion. Below are some of the other most popular things to do in San Pedro.

6. Visit Bacalar Chico Marine Reserve

Located on the northern tip of Ambergris Caye, Bacalar Chico Marine Reserve is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an incredible destination for nature lovers. The reserve offers some of the most pristine snorkeling and diving spots, with untouched coral reefs and diverse marine life. Accessible by boat, it’s a great place to experience Belize’s natural beauty away from the crowds.

7. Scuba Diving the Great Blue Hole

For certified divers, a trip to Belize’s Great Blue Hole is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Located about 60 miles from San Pedro, this giant marine sinkhole is one of the top dive sites in the world, known for its incredible depth and unique limestone formations.

Divers often see reef sharks and various other deep-sea creatures. Note that this is an advanced dive, best suited for experienced divers.

8. Go Fishing in the Flats

Belize is famous for its excellent fishing, particularly in the flats around Ambergris Caye. Fly-fishing for bonefish, tarpon, and permit is a popular option here, and several charters cater specifically to fishing enthusiasts.

Even if you’re new to fishing, local guides can help you learn the ropes and enjoy a fun, laid-back day on the water.

9. Explore the Marco Gonzalez Maya Site

For a touch of history, head south of San Pedro to the Marco Gonzalez Maya Site. This small but significant Maya site offers a peek into Belize’s ancient past, with remnants of pottery, artifacts, and structures dating back centuries.

It’s an interesting contrast to the beach vibes and provides a unique cultural experience. Wear sturdy shoes as the terrain can be a bit uneven.

10. Enjoy a Sunset Sail

A sunset sail is a relaxing way to cap off a day in San Pedro. Many local operators offer sunset cruises, complete with drinks, appetizers, and music as you drift along the Caribbean Sea.

This is an especially popular option for couples looking to add a bit of romance to their trip or anyone who simply wants to unwind with a view.

11. Visit Secret Buddha Garden

Nestled in the lush greenery just outside San Pedro, the Secret Buddha Garden is a hidden gem featuring Buddha statues, winding paths, and tranquil spots to relax and enjoy nature.

It’s a peaceful spot for anyone seeking a quiet escape and an ideal backdrop for some unique photos. The garden is small, so it makes for a great stop when you have a free hour or two.

Where to Stay in San Pedro Belize

Mahogany Bay Resort (Marriott Homes and Villas)
Perfect for large groups, Mahogany Bay offers spacious vacation rentals through Marriott Homes and Villas, allowing guests to earn Bonvoy points. We stayed in the four-bedroom Tranquility home, complete with a private pool and access to resort amenities like on-site dining and a larger communal pool.

Mahogany Bay Resort (Hilton)
This resort also features traditional hotel rooms with access to all the amenities, including a private beach. It’s close to downtown San Pedro, ideal for easy access to dining and shopping. The only drawback is the distance from Secret Beach, about a one-hour golf cart ride.

Victoria House Resort & Spa
A beachfront luxury resort featuring private villas, some with plunge pools, along with an on-site spa and fine dining options.

Matachica Resort & Spa
An adults-only escape, known for its colorful thatched-roof casitas and Caribbean views. Matachica offers a secluded experience with a full-service spa and gourmet restaurant, ideal for couples.

What to Wear in San Pedro

Dress for San Pedro like any other beachy destination, such as Mexico. Think shorts, flip flops, and swimwear.

During the day, you will likely be in the water or exploring. For the pool or beach, be sure to pack swimsuits, cover ups, sandals, and a beach bag. For days you are exploring, most people wear casual outfits like shorts and a t-shirt, a matching linen set, or a casual sundress.

At night, San Pedro is also quite casual. I wore a simple sundress and sandals for dinner every night but you could definitely get away with shorts and a t-shirt if that is more your style.
