What to Wear on a Long-Haul Flight: Cute and Comfy Outfits

I feel like there are two types of people at the airport – the people that look cute and polished and those that look like they just rolled out of bed. This guide to what to wear on a long-haul flight will break down how to be both cute and comfortable.

Below, I share a couple outfit collages of what to wear on a travel day.

The first collage is for people like me who like to be super comfy, but I’ll explain how to elevate it above pajamas. The second collage is more fashionable outfits that are still easy to wear for a 6+ hour flight.

If you like to dress super comfortable on a long flight, I’m with you. People will say you’re supposed to dress up for international flights, especially in premium cabins, but that’s a very outdated idea. It is very ok to wear leggings, sweats, and casual clothing.

To elevate the outfit from your old college sweatshirt or ratty leggings, the above collage shows some cute outfit ideas for a comfortable travel day.

For a nicer take on leggings, try a matching set with a cute jacket on top. Coordinated sweats in a fitted size typically look better than older oversized ones.

This traveler jumpsuit is super comfortable, easy to throw on, and looks cute.

For footwear, I typically wear my bulkiest pair of shoes such as boots or sneakers.

If you have the packing space to bring a dedicated pair of plane shoes, Ugg slippers or Birkenstocks are great. They are also nice to have when you get to your hotel.

Fashionable Airplane Outfit Ideas

If you prefer to be more fashion-forward, the above collage shows how to do that without sacrificing comfort.

The first outfit is sold as a set, has a stretchy waistband, and still looks cute. The second outfit is an example of how layering can elevate a comfy look. It’s also a great way to bring a bit jacket without taking up luggage space.

Typically, jeans on a long flight would be a hard no for me. However, these jeans from outfit three are super comfortable and I’ve happily worn them on multiple flights between the US and Europe.

Finally, outfit four is a super cute jumpsuit in a soft material with a fun open back.

My simple hack for choosing what to wear on a plane is having a dedicated travel day shirt or sweatshirt. The above collage shows some cute options.

These shirts also make a great gift for a travel lover or friends on a group trip.

Long-haul Flight Carryon Packing List

The Best Carryon Backpack – This backpack is the holy grail of carryon bags. It opens fully like a suitcase, making it super easy to pack and unpack.

There are also a lot of different pockets to store all your stuff. What makes this the best carryon, however, is the amount of stuff it fits.

You can easily pack all of your carryon essentials on this list plus a few backup outfits for your trip.

Turtle Neck Pillow – I have yet to find a comfortable way to sleep on a plane, short of upgrading to business class. However, this unique neck pillow is the best solution I’ve found so far for resting my head in an economy seat.

Noise Cancelling Headphones – These headphones are perfect for cancelling out plane noises and watching movies.

Under Eye Mask – I love doing some skincare during a long-haul flight. These under eye masks feel so refreshing and keep me from looking like a zombie after the flight.

Sleep Mask – Block out the light with an eye mask for sleep.

iPad or E-Reader – I download all of my books to the Kindle app on my iPad. I also love having a backup device in case the in-seat entertainment is broken.

Moisturizing Serum – This face mask will help prevent your skin from drying out on a long flight and helps combat jetlag.

Portable Charger – Ensure your devices are all fully charged when you arrive at your destination. I’ve been let down by broken or missing seatback chargers too many times.

Toothbrush Kit – The first thing I do after a long flight is brush my teeth. This travel set is compact and great for airplanes.

Compression Socks – Prevent blood clots and swollen legs with a good pair of compression socks.
