The Grand Wailea luau is the perfect combination between luxurious and authentic. The family style feast is delicious, and the open bar cannot be missed.

Choosing a Luau in Maui
While attending a Hawaiian luau is a must, choosing the right one can be tricky. Based on this article, it is easy to assume my favorite is the Grand Wailea luau. If you are staying in the Wailea area or west maui, this luau is the clear choice for you.
However, there are great Maui luau’s all over the island. If you are staying in Lahaina, I have heard great things about the Old Lahaina Luau. This is one of the best-known luau’s on the island and has a reputation for being one of the most authentic.
When choosing a luau in Maui, there are a few factors you should consider: price, show time, food offerings and location. Luau’s typically cost between $50 and $300 per person and the biggest difference between these price points is the food and alcohol.
Some families with kids may consider an earlier showtime to collaborate with bedtime, while adults may prefer a nighttime event. The food is the biggest difference between luaus. Some will offer mediocre buffets while some offer high-end dining.
Finally, location can be a deciding factor depending on how much you want to drive and your access to a rental car.
Getting to the Grand Wailea Luau
The Grand Wailea resort makes it easy to visit their luau. If you are staying in the Wailea area, the Grand Wailea is centrally located and a quick walk from any resort.
If you are staying in a different area of Maui, the Grand Wailea luau offers complimentary valet parking for visitors.
Food at the Grand Wailea Luau
The food at the Grand Wailea Luau is the factor that makes it stand out among all the other Maui luau’s. Typically, the food is served buffet style.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the luau has adapted to a family style service. Personally, I hope they keep the family style service, but the buffet is great as well.
The cuisine is an upscale take on traditional Hawaiian fare. The meal starts with a serving of Poi, a traditional taro root paste.
I am not a fan of Poi, but appreciate the nod to Hawaiian tradition. Next, a collection of starters is offered, including green salad, mac salad, poke and traditional dried beef salad.
The main course is the star of the Grand Wailea Luau dinner. They serve teriyaki steak, shoyu chicken, mahi mahi and Kalua pig.
All these dishes are delicious, and the variety ensures there is something for everyone. Finally, a collection of tasty desserts is served to round out the meal.
Drinks at the Grand Wailea Luau
The higher price-point of this luau pays for an open bar service. While this is not a priority for some, an open bar on a Maui vacation is paradise to me.
The Grand Wailea luau has two bars and table service to be sure guests have access to all beverages on demand.
As you enter the luau, you will be started with a Blue Hawaiian cocktail. This vibrant cocktail is made with rum, blue curacao, pineapple juice and sweet and sour mix.
I enjoyed this cocktail, but many may prefer to head directly to the bar. The open bar offers beer, wine, well drinks and some Hawaiian cocktails.
If you are sticking with the Hawaiian theme, be sure to order a mai tai or pina colada.
Hula Dancing at the Luau
Now, time to discuss the main event. While the food and drink is a great asset, the real reason to visit a Maui luau is to experience the local culture and hula dancing.
Without sharing too much, here is what to expect from the hula dancing at this grand luau.
The show begins with a hula lesson led by the charismatic Master of Ceremonies. The MC will get everyone on their feet to learn a simple dance with basic hand motions and chanting.
Next, the professional show begins where they describe the history of Hawaii through dance. The MC teaches the stories of Pele and Kanaka. The dancers also give a quick sampling of how Hula dance has changed through the decades.
The show wraps with a comprehensive fire dance performance. The fire dancing was the highlight of the show for me since it was both artistic and daring. If you are feeling lucky, call for an encore to be treated to a final dance.
Another great aspect of the Grand Wailea luau and performance is the stunning location. Set on Wailea beach, nothing can beat watching these fantastic dancers to a Maui sunset. Be sure to enjoy the beautiful ocean front luau grounds before or after the show.
