14 Best Places to Visit in the US in November 2024
I take a vacation over Thanksgiving week each year because it is an easy to way take three days off work and take a 9 day vacation. We often take a tropical trip, but there are a ton of places to visit in the US in November as well.
From catching the tail end of fall foliage in New England, to watching the Thanksgiving day parade in New York or relaxing on the beach in Maui, there is a perfect vacation for each traveler.
With the help of some travel blogger friends, I put together this list of where to visit in the United States in November to help you decide where to travel next.

1. Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona
Average November Weather: High 58°F / Low 28°F
Petrified Forest National Park is one of Arizona’s best hidden gems. Located in the teeny town of Holbrook in the northeastern corner of the state, the park offers colorful badlands, barren deserts, and, true to its name, countless pieces of fossilized wood.
One of the best things about visiting the park is that it’s easily explored by almost all travelers, given that you can see most of its highlights by stopping at scenic viewpoints or short, easy hiking trails.
For example, don’t miss the Blue Mesa Trail, where you’ll walk below the rim of a mesa and meander between indigo-colored badlands. Another great option is the Crystal Forest Trail, where you’ll stroll along the gently rolling hills that are covered with millions of pieces of ancient petrified wood.
While the park rarely is crowded, November is a great time to enjoy its natural beauty in peace and solitude. Plus, the weather is perfect for enjoying the outdoors, with clear skies and daily highs in the 60s.

2. Palm Springs, California
Average November Weather: High 79°F / Low 50°F
Palm Springs is an ideal vacation destination, especially in November. My trip last Thanksgiving with my mother and sister was delightful.
Driving from LA, we encountered huge dinosaurs near Hadley’s Fruit Orchards, where we enjoyed their famous date shakes—a must-try creamy treat made with fresh local dates.
Palm Springs is renowned for its year-round sunshine and mid-century modern architecture. We stayed in a charming 50’s style Airbnb with a full kitchen, perfect for our Thanksgiving pies. Exploring Palm Springs, we admired stunning mid-century homes and strolled along Palm Canyon Drive.
The Thousand Palms Oasis Reserve, located directly over the San Andreas Fault, offers fascinating hikes and informative tours. Nearby Desert Hot Springs boasts hot mineral water spas and the unique Cabot’s Pueblo Museum.
Our day trip to the Salton Sea included stops at Bombay Beach, Salvation Mountain, and Slab City—an off-the-grid artist community. Relaxing by the Airbnb pool and thrift store shopping rounded out our trip.
November’s milder weather makes it an excellent time to visit. However, at Thanksgiving time, the holiday closures and heavy return traffic to LA can be drawbacks. Plan ahead to maximize your Palm Springs experience.

3. Boulder, Colorado
Average November Weather: High 52°F / Low 26°F
Colorado is a year round destination, with the potential for beautiful, sunny days and mild daytime temperature anytime of the year. Boulder is a university town tucked into the base of the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, and it attracts visitors every year with its adorable downtown and great outdoors access.
In November, you can walk in Chautauqua Park, go shopping at the boutiques along the Pearl Street Mall, and even head into nearby Rocky Mountain National Park for hiking, snowshoeing, and cross country skiing.
November is a great time to beat the crowds that flock to Boulder in the summer and have a better chance of meeting the city’s famously eccentric and outdoorsy locals. Be sure to swing by some local spots like Mountain Sun Brewery and Foolish Craig’s Cafe before you leave.
There are a few downsides to traveling to Boulder in winter, namely the potential for snowy or very cold days. Most people in Boulder still find ways to get outside in the winter, but you will need to have a car that is up to the task of driving in the snow and experience with winter driving.

4. Key West, Florida
Average November Weather: High 80°F / Low 72°F
There is something special about visiting Key West in November. You’ll generally have amazing weather plus all of the amazing things Key West has to offer. And Key West does have a lot to offer!
Water activities are nearly endless. Choose from snorkeling, jet skiing, dolphin watching, kayaking, or fishing. There are plenty of museums to take in history; two favorites are the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum and the Key West Lighthouse.
It’s always fun to rent a golf cart or bike to explore the island and you should definitely check out the fort and beach at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park. End your night on Duval Street with your drink of choice and live music.
But something unique about visiting Key West in November is The World Championship Power Boat Races that take place towards the beginning of the month. You’ll get to watch high-speed powerboats race, reaching speeds of up to 140 miles per hour! The week-long event also includes parades, parties, and meet-and-greets.
Even though we typically don’t see as many hurricanes in November, official hurricane season doesn’t end until November 30th so you’ll want flexible plans and/or travel insurance.
Also, “snowbird season” (when people relocate to the warmer states) tends to start right around Thanksgiving, so it will start getting busier and more expensive towards the end of the month.

5. Miami, Florida
Average November Weather: High 80°F / Low 68°F
Traveling to Miami in November is a simply great idea. The whole region is just coming out of the wet season, the hurricane risk is nearly non-existent, and the temperatures are warm and inviting while not too warm.
I have traveled a lot to Miami, and it is fair to say it is one of my favorite cities, which (for me) has a lot to do with the amazing Miami Beach, just a short drive from Downtown.
In November, you can enjoy all the amazing sights and activities in Miami without worrying about the excruciating heat and humidity.
A few things I recommend you don’t miss are visiting Wynwood Walls in the Miami Art District, spending time at the stunning Vizcaya Gardens, doing a Little Havana food tour, and a half-day tour to fly across the Everglades in a hovercraft!
Naturally, I recommend that you head to Miami Beach for a chill beach day. My favorite area is South Beach, as there is always lots of life and buzz there. It is also close to a myriad of bars, restaurants, and shopping areas. From South Beach, you are also close to the vibrant South Pointe Park.
There are a variety of great concerts in Miami in November, like Pink on the 14th and Matteo Bocelli on the 22nd of the month. You can also attend the Country Bay Music Festival, which is happening the 11-12th of the month on Key Biscayne, but you might want to be quick as the tickets may sell out!

6. Orlando, Florida
Average November Weather: High 78°F / Low 59°F
November is a great month to visit Orlando because temperatures are lower, humidity is less striking, and there are overall fewer crowds–specifically at the theme parks and resorts.
Technically, most of November is considered the “off season” for Orlando, so you’ll likely find discounted hotel deals and get better rates on tickets and attractions.
The only exception is the week of the Thanksgiving holiday when swarms of visitors flock to Orlando’s theme parks and resorts.
Orlando is a great vacation destination for every traveler, whether you’re traveling as a family with kids, a couple, a group of friends, or solo. There is something for everyone, even if you don’t enjoy the theme parks.
Aside from visiting Disney World or Universal Studios, visitors to Orlando can also catch a college football game at the University of Central Florida, shop at the Lake Eola Farmers Market, or go kayaking at one of the many natural springs in Central Florida!
Plus, nearby towns like Winter Park and Daytona Beach offer plenty of fun for Orlando visitors to enjoy, as well!
The only downside of visiting Orlando in November is that there’s still a chance of hurricanes. Hurricane season in Florida typically lasts from June through the end of November.
I recommend booking travel insurance and protecting your hotel and flight bookings just in case you can’t make it down to Florida due to hurricane activity!

7. Maui, Hawaii
Average November Weather: High 82°F / Low 68°F
Forget the overcrowded summer rush – Maui in the off season is where it’s at. As the summer heat mellows, you’ll find comfortable temperatures in the high 70s, perfect for exploring the island’s diverse landscapes.
November marks the beginning of humpback whale season in Maui. Their population during this month is so numerous that it is almost guaranteed to witness these majestic creatures migrating back to Hawaiian waters for breeding and calving.
Beyond the natural beauty, November also offers a glimpse into Maui’s culture. Attend the Made in Maui County Festival, to see local art, crafts, and cuisine.
It’s important to note that November marks the start of the island’s rainy season, so there’s a chance of heavier showers. Additionally, some tours or events might have adjusted schedules compared to peak season.
However, with fewer crowds, prices are also lower with better opportunities for last minute bookings.
The rainy season is also great for anyone interested in exploring the island’s natural beauty, as it leaves the island even more green and the waterfalls more full.
With comfortable weather, abundant wildlife, and unique cultural experiences, Maui in November offers a hidden gem for the adventurous traveler seeking an authentic island experience.

8. New Orleans, Louisiana
Average November Weather: High 70°F / Low 51°F
New Orleans is one of the US’s most exciting, vibrant and dynamic cities. It has its own culture, a unique vibe and there are an overwhelming amount of fun things to see and do. Suffice it to say, it’s a fabulous place to visit!
One of the best things to do in New Orleans is to explore its varied and vibrant neighborhoods. The French Quarter is famous for its architecture and history, while the leafy Garden District is known for its exceptional walking tours.
For world-class live music, you can’t miss Frenchmen Street in the Marigny and for an off-the-beaten-track experience, be sure to book a tour through Treme.
November is a lovely time to visit New Orleans. It’s shoulder season, so expect mild weather and little to no crowds.
Because it’s New Orleans, there’s always a festival happening, and in November the best ones include the Creole gumbo festival, the beignet festival and the Bayou Bacchanal, a festival to celebrate the Caribbean culture and community.
The only downside to visiting in November is that there are still slight chances of rain, so be sure to pack a rain jacket or an umbrella.

9. New York, New York
Average November Weather: High 54°F / Low 41°F
New York City is one of the best places to travel in November in the United States because of its fall colors and weather. Plus, it is less busy than visiting in summer or around the Christmas season.
The downside is, it can get a bit chilly, especially towards the end of the fall season and Thanksgiving week will be a more expensive time to visit with lots of crowds.
There is plenty to do in NYC, especially in the fall. If you have never visited before, you will want to check out some of the main sites such as the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, the Vessel, and one of the many museums such as the MET or Natural History Museum.
In fall, you will for sure want to take a walk through Central Park to see the fall colors. The weather will be perfect for a stroll. Little Island is also the perfect place to hang out and see the fall colors.
Fall is also a great time to see Broadways shows because November has Broadway Cares week where they raise extra money for charities.
If you visit after Thanksgiving, you can check out the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center too. Additionally, if you are there on Thanksgiving, you can see the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade!

10. Old Fort, North Carolina
Average November Weather: High 60°F / Low 36°F
Old Fort, North Carolina, is one of my personal favorite hidden gems that shines bright in November.
With a cozy population of 611, this small town packs a punch with delightful activities, mouth-watering food, museums and a central location that makes it a gateway to North Carolina’s top attractions.
Just 9 miles from Black Mountain, 25 miles from Lake Lure, and 30 miles from Asheville, Old Fort is your perfect launchpad for adventure.
And let’s not forget one of the state’s superstar waterfalls (and one of my favorite hikes), Catawba Falls, right in Old Fort’s backyard.
November brings mild weather, with temperatures ranging between 40-70°F, ideal for hiking and soaking in the scenery.
The festive spirit kicks in as the town and its neighbors start decking the halls with Christmas decorations, creating a magical atmosphere.
The only downfall? While the weather is generally delightful, it’s not uncommon for a few chilly days to sneak in, so pack and plan your activities accordingly.
Old Fort’s charming vibe and scenic beauty make it a must-visit in November, offering both serenity and adventure equally.

11. Newport, Rhode Island
Average November Weather: High 54°F / Low 38°F
Newport, Rhode Island, is a charming destination to visit in November. The fall foliage is still vibrant, creating a picturesque backdrop for your travels.
There are plenty of things to do in Newport for any visitor. One of the highlights is the Cliff Walk, a 3.5-mile scenic path along the shoreline that offers stunning ocean views and glimpses of the grand Gilded Age Newport mansions.
You can tour the Breakers and Marble House, allowing you to step back in time and explore opulent architecture and décor.
November is a great time to visit because the summer crowds have thinned, making it easier to enjoy the attractions at a leisurely pace.
You also get to enjoy Halloween décor in the beginning of the month and holiday décor at the end of the month. On the other hand, the weather can be chilly and unpredictable, so pack warm clothing.

12. Charleston, South Carolina
Average November Weather: High 68°F / Low 48°F
November is the perfect time to visit Charleston, South Carolina! Not only is hurricane season finally over, the weather is cool enough to explore cute alleyways and boutiques downtown, but it’s still warm enough if you want a walk on the beach.
The fall is the perfect time for those outdoor activities, including exploring Fort Moultrie and Fort Sumter, hiking on some of Charleston’s best trails, and strolling along the Battery.
You’ll also have the city nearly to yourself as the peak tourist season is long past, which means you’ll be able to get reservations at all of the city’s best restaurants and bars.
Rub shoulders with locals at some of the city’s fun annual events held in November, including the Charleston Scottish Games and the Charleston Literary Festival.

13. Moab, Utah
Average November Weather: High 55°F / Low 30°F
Moab, Utah, which serves as the gateway to Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, is a fantastic vacation destination for most of the year. Visitors can hike and mountain bike past many red rock formations within and outside of the parks. Many also enjoy Moab’s spectacular rock climbing, rafting, kayaking, and off-road jeep tours.
Why visit in November though? First and foremost, it is a great way to avoid the crowds when visiting Moab. Additionally, the temperatures are cooler and the accommodation rates are lower.
Visitors find that the parks are more peaceful, allowing for easy access to the parks’ breathtaking panoramas. Moab’s cozy cafés and vibrant art galleries are ideal for a break from the vast number of outdoor activities.
Keep in mind that average daytime high temperatures are in the high 50’s and lows can be in the 30’s. It may be too chilly for some water sports. Bring along a jacket, hat, and gloves, and you’ll be prepared for most other outdoor adventures.

14. Quechee, Vermont
Average November Weather: High 45°F / Low 29°F
Quechee is a charming small town in central Vermont, located just across the border from New Hampshire. Known for its artisans, antiques, and nature sanctuaries, Quechee is the perfect destination for a day of leaf-peeping, complemented by a variety of family-friendly activities when fall foliage is at its peak season in November.
Route 4, accessible from Quechee or directly from Highway 89 towards Woodstock, is one of the quintessential New England roads for experiencing Vermont’s stunning fall foliage. This scenic route winds through valleys and mountains, offering breathtaking panoramic views.
For those who want to fully immerse themselves in the fall foliage, the VINS Nature Center, located just outside the center of Quechee, is an excellent spot. Alternatively, Quechee State Park offers camping, picnic areas, and a fantastic view of the Quechee Gorge from the iconic bridge.
In the heart of Quechee, just across the covered bridge, you’ll find Simon Pearce’s store and glassblowing workshop where visitors can shop for fine glassware, dine at the exquisite restaurant, enjoy a drink at the bar, or watch live glass blowing demonstrations in the basement.
Don’t miss the back door that opens to a stunning view of the waterfall behind the workshop. Nearby, you can also visit Andrew Pearce’s wood carving factory store for more unique handcrafted items.
Families will enjoy the enormous antique mall, which houses a toy museum and a petting llama farm, providing a fun stop for children.
Keep in mind that November in New England can be chilly so be sure to dress in plenty of layers that you can shed during the day and pull back on in the evenings when the sun goes down.
