What to Wear to Mexico During the Day
If you aren’t at a pool, some typical daytime activities in Mexico are a food tour, ziplining, exploring town, or hanging out at the resort. If you do any of these activities, shorts and a short sleeve top is the best outfit.
In the above collage, I share a variety of shorts and shirts for men. For bottoms, you should bring 2-3 pairs of neutral shorts and wear them throughout the trip with different tops.
For shirts, you can be casual and wear a plain t-shirt or dress up a bit more with a collared shirt. A polo or short sleeve button up are cool and breathable, but look great.
This performance button up is my favorite men’s vacation shirt because it will keep you cool and comes in a ton of fun patterns.
For footwear, nice flip flops are appropriate anywhere. However, if you are doing adventure activities or just prefer a closed-toed shoe, a sneaker is a great item to bring.

Outfits to Wear in Mexico at Night
In general, you can wear very similar clothes during the day and at night in Mexico. Restaurants, bars, and night clubs in Mexico are generally casual. Since temperatures are nearly always warm, its completely ok to wear sandals and shorts at night.
To dress up a bit more, any shirt with a collar is a great way to look nice for a night out, while still comfortable. If you prefer pants over shorts, I love these linen joggers since they are lightweight and match with most tops.

Men’s Pool Outfit Ideas
Lets be honest, if you are going on a beach vacation to Mexico, chances are you will be in swimwear 90% of the time. My Mexico trips usually consist of at least a few pool, beach, and/or boat days.
Since you will be spending a lot of time in a swimsuit, it’s worth investing in a good one. For a Mexico vacation, I pack swimsuits with bright colors and tropical patterns to match the vibe of the trip.
For men, a linen button up is a great top to pair with a swimsuit. It can be buttoned up to wear to lunch or walking around or left unbuttoned poolside. Linen is a great fabric in general because it’s light and breathable.
In addition, be sure to pack a good pair of sandals or flip flops. I love these leather flip flops because they can easily be worn to the pool, to town, or out to dinner. If you only bring one pair of shoes on the trip, these are a great one to choose.

Shoes to Pack for Mexico
For a typical Mexico vacation, you should only need 2-3 pairs of shoes:
The first is a pair of flip flops for the pool, beach, day time, and casual dinners.
I recommend a leather flip flop since they look a bit dressier than the cheap plastic ones.
The second is a pair of walking shoes for exploring and adventure activities such as horseback riding or ziplining.
The third, optional, pair is water sandals for rocky beaches or wet activities such as tubing or canyoneering.
This brand is affordable and durable.
Mexico Packing List Essentials
In addition to the above outfits to wear in Mexico, you cannot forget these other essentials.

- Portable charger – keep your phone and/or reading device charged during a long beach day
- Imodium – in case the notorious Mexico water upsets your stomach

What is the Average Weather in Mexico Each Season?
Mexico is a large country with varied climates, from tropical to desert. Depending on where you are in the country, the average weather can vary greatly. Generally speaking, Mexico experiences four distinct seasons.
Winter (December to February) temperatures tend to be mild and comfortable, though northern areas may experience cooler temperatures and even snowfall.
During this season, it is common for areas near the coast to have higher humidity levels than inland locations.
Spring (March to May) is characterized by pleasant temperatures with generally clear skies throughout most of Mexico. It’s usually cool enough during the day that a light layers like a jacket or sweater may be necessary at night.
Summer (June to August) brings higher temperatures, particularly in the central and southern regions of the country, while winds can bring cooler conditions to coastal areas.
Fall (September to November) sees warm days and cool evenings across much of Mexico as temperatures begin cooling off again across the country.
This is also when Mexico often experiences some of its highest rainfall totals each year as tropical storms make their way northward into Central America from the Caribbean Sea.
FAQ – What to Wear in Mexico Men
Men usually wear very casual and comfortable clothing when vacationing in Mexico. Shorts, t-shirts, and sandals are the most common outfits for a day out exploring. If you plan on going out to dinner at night, be sure to pack a few nice collared shirts and dressier sandals. Mexico is also famous for its brightly colored embroidered shirts that many men like to purchase as souvenirs or to wear while they are there.
Yes, men are allowed to wear shorts in Mexico. In resort areas such as Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Cabo, or Cozumel, men primarily wear shorts. If you are visiting somewhere more metropolitan like Mexico City, you will see less men wearing shorts as people tend to dress up more in these areas.
Mexico is a very diverse country, both culturally and geographically, so it can be difficult to provide a definitive answer to this question. In the larger cities like Mexico City, modern dress is more common and there are generally no formal dress codes. However, in more rural areas or smaller towns, traditional dress may be expected and could even be required in certain places of worship or other places of cultural importance. In tourist areas, there is typically no dress code.
